Why it caught on: the picture is the Trollface, a crude drawing of a grinning face first posted online in 2008, with a Santa hat and beard added. It was captioned with a wicked "ho ho ho" or a spoiler about Santa, to show the trolling at its most seasonal. It spread because every December gives people a reason to wind up their friends and relatives, and the face does it without saying a word.
