Why it caught on: the picture shows American gymnast McKayla Maroney on the podium at the 2012 London Olympics, wearing her silver medal for the vault and holding flowers, with her lips pushed to one side in a flat, unimpressed look. After the photo went round in August 2012, people pasted her into pictures of famous achievements and wonders, from rockets to pyramids, and captioned them "not impressed". It spread because the face fits any moment where something is meant to be amazing and clearly isn't.
