Why it caught on: the picture shows a man in sunglasses, a dark jacket and a white sleeveless shirt, mid-dance beside a riverside, from the video for "Gangnam Style" by the South Korean rapper Psy, released in July 2012. The horse-riding dance and the catchy chorus made it the first video to pass a billion views on YouTube, and it spread because anyone could copy the move and caption it with whatever they were already thinking.
