You open the group chat on a Friday afternoon and someone has already posted the picture. You reply with the same one. The weekend has begun, and productivity ended an hour ago. Someone in the office says they only listen to music that is "properly written". Then the chorus of a song in a language none of you speak comes on at the Christmas party, and every single one of you knows every move. You are in a bar and a stranger asks what you're listening to. You say you don't know what any of the words mean. You also say you've played it forty times this week, and that this is not up for discussion. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows a man in sunglasses, a dark jacket and a white sleeveless shirt, mid-dance beside a riverside, from the video for "Gangnam Style" by the South Korean rapper Psy, released in July 2012. The horse-riding dance and the catchy chorus made it the first video to pass a billion views on YouTube, and it spread because anyone could copy the move and caption it with whatever they were already thinking.
