Why it caught on: the picture is a still of King Leonidas, played by Gerard Butler, mid-shout in the 2006 film *300*, a stylised retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae. The line "This is Sparta!" was lifted into countless jokes, and the format works because anyone can swap in a tiny, ridiculous announcement and deliver it with total warlike conviction.
