Your boss announces a team offsite and you say nothing. Then the calendar invite arrives for a Saturday, and you stand at your desk with a mug in your hand, ready to defend a weekend that was never yours to begin with. Someone suggests "just a quick call" at ten to six. You look at the clock, you look at your coat, and you tell them, with the calm of a man holding a narrow pass, that it can go in an email. The group chat proposes a holiday where everyone pays a deposit by Friday. You have a spreadsheet, a budget and a very clear no. Three people have already typed "can't wait!" and are looking at you. Your friend asks if you want to pop round for one drink. You know how this goes. There is one drink, then a kebab, then a taxi at 3 am. You say "sure, one", and the whole room goes quiet. **Why it caught on:** the picture is a still of King Leonidas, played by Gerard Butler, mid-shout in the 2006 film *300*, a stylised retelling of the Battle of Thermopylae. The line "This is Sparta!" was lifted into countless jokes, and the format works because anyone can swap in a tiny, ridiculous announcement and deliver it with total warlike conviction.
