Yeah...If you could come to my leadership meeting / that'd be great
A Bill Lumbergh post.
Your inbox has a calendar invite for 4:45 on a Friday. No agenda, no description, just a title that says "Quick chat". You accept, because declining would mean a conversation about declining. Someone asks whether you could "pop in on Saturday, just for a couple of hours". There is no overtime and no mention of it ever being repaid. It is phrased as a favour, and it lands as a schedule. The new cover sheet for the TPS reports arrives by email, with a memo about the memo. You read it twice and find the cover sheet is the only part that changed. Nobody can say why. Someone has parked in your space again. The note you leave is polite, firm and slightly passive. It begins "Hi there, just a gentle reminder", and everyone in the building knows exactly what it means. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows Bill Lumbergh, the smug, suspendered boss played by Gary Cole in the 1999 film *Office Space*, holding a coffee mug and talking to a worker. His catchphrase, "Yeah, if you could go ahead and do that, that'd be great", became a template for the polite request that is really an order. It spread because every office has someone who can make a demand sound like a kindness, and the format fits any complaint, from spelling errors to voting for the poster.
