Why it caught on: the picture shows Bill Lumbergh, the smug, suspendered boss played by Gary Cole in the 1999 film *Office Space*, holding a coffee mug and talking to a worker. His catchphrase, "Yeah, if you could go ahead and do that, that'd be great", became a template for the polite request that is really an order. It spread because every office has someone who can make a demand sound like a kindness, and the format fits any complaint, from spelling errors to voting for the poster.
