Someone says "the cloud" in a meeting and you picture a warehouse with a man in it. What if the man is tired? What if it's all one man? The slides move on without you. The self-checkout says "unexpected item in the bagging area" and you freeze. What if you are the unexpected item? A member of staff walks over, taps the screen, and walks off. Nothing is explained. **Why it caught on:** the picture shows a shaggy-haired young man looking startled, with his mouth slightly open, as if the thought has only just arrived. It was captioned with a "what if" question, then a second line that spun it into a conspiracy theory, and the format spread because anyone can write one. People used it for tech paranoia, politics and religion, as well as stoned-sounding shower thoughts about Pokémon and the Matrix, and the half-formed theory landing in the second line is the whole joke.
