Ringing the pizza place at 11pm, you say "just the one" in a firm voice. The person on the line asks if that's for you or for the table. You have already decided it's for the table, and you are the table. The bank's helpline puts you on hold for forty minutes. When a human finally answers, you open with a stern "hello?" as though you were the one who had been kept waiting. A group order goes round the office, and everyone says "just a small one". You phone it in with total confidence. The total is read back to you and you say "yes, that's fine" without checking it. Your mum calls to ask if you've eaten. You have, twice. You tell her you're about to, which is also true. **Why it caught on:** the picture is a press photo of a very young Chinese boy holding a toy phone to his ear, mouth wide open mid-call. Captioners turned it into the all-purpose phone-in-an-order face, mostly with pizza and fast food. Much of the early humour leaned on a mock accent and on jokes about the child's size, which is the stereotype the meme was built on. It has lasted because the face suits any call where you are asking for far too much, with total confidence.
