Do you like the sandwich I made you? / You forgot the fucking mayonnaise!
A Alpha Boyfriend post.
You make a perfectly reasonable request, such as turning the heating down by one degree, and the reply is a speech about respect, freedom and what kind of household this is. It is a radiator. Someone makes you a sandwich. It is the wrong filling. You say so, gently, with a thank-you on either side, and are somehow now the villain of the evening and the one doing the washing-up. A friend says they need a bit of time to themselves. Another friend hears this as a declaration of war and replies with the full force of a group chat. Eleven messages in, nobody remembers what the original plan was. You tell the truth once, softly, about something small, like a haircut or a seat at the cinema. The answer is so out of proportion that you check the room for the camera. **Why it caught on:** the picture is a two-panel watercolour-style comic: a dark-haired woman smiles, one hand on a man's shoulder, and in the second panel he reacts. People filled the top with something tender or trivial and the bottom with an absurdly aggressive reply. It spread because the format is easy to reuse and the stereotype behind it is plain: the self-styled "alpha" man who meets affection with threats and bluster.
