Rebecca Black

There are millions of groans heard around the world when musical artist Rebecca Black released her single entitled "Friday". She began in internet anonymity, starting out singing on YouTube. But in March of 2011 when the video for Friday was released, she shot straight to infamy with the incredibly repetitive lyrics and heavy-handed use of auto tune used in an attempt to make her voice sound palatable.

It was too much for people, and she was soundly and thoroughly ridiculed for going so overboard with the auto tune. People were beyond irritated by the brain-numbing lyrics, and hence, a meme was born.

Her music video was produced by a California video company called Ark Music Factory that was also responsible for producing the videos for other artists including "Butterflies" by Alana Lee and "Can’t Get You Out of My Mind" by Kaya.

The irony is that the song did not become popular due to traditional means. It was not a good sone. It was not a good video. No one seemed to like it. In fact, its popularity seemed to be solely because so many people despised it. It was one of the only examples of something becoming popular due to intense dislike rather than any actual redeeming qualities.

One of the things that people latched on to was a point in the lyrics where Black seems to have trouble deciding which seat to take. Such an inane problem made the video and Black open season.

Kickin’ in the front seat

Sittin’ in the back seat

Gotta make my mind up

Which seat can I take?

Despite the pressure, Black refused to back down and remove her video. Although unhappy and shocked at the hurtful comments, she decided not to let them get to her and the video remained up.

Multiple parodies were spawned from the "Friday" video, including a religious-themed video called "Sunday". Justin-Bieber">Justin Bieber got into the mix, singing a few strains of the song at one of his concerts. In June of 2011, artist Katy Perry’s video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" showed Rebecca Black giving Katy Perry’s uber-nerdy girl character a full makeover.

The meme for Rebecca Black has spread to multiple forms, including artwork, videos, and mashups.
