Your team has just conceded a goal in the ninetieth minute, in a match that had already gone wrong in the eightieth. A man behind you stands up, claps slowly and says nothing. He doesn't need to.

You open the spreadsheet your colleague spent a week on and find a cell with a formula that just says "=1+1". Nothing else is wrong with it. Everything else is wrong with it.

Why it caught on: the picture shows Dr Zoidberg, the red, tentacle-faced lobster-like alien doctor from the animated series Futurama, wide-eyed and with claws raised in dismay while sitting in a theatre audience. Fans took his catchphrase-style line "Your (thing) is bad, and you should feel bad" and made it the standard reply to anything disappointing, from Internet Explorer to foreign policy. It spread because the format is easy to fill in, and because it lets you be scathing while sounding like a cheerful, slightly pitiful cartoon.
