The fridge at work has a pot of something in it with a name on it that nobody recognises. It has been there for weeks. It is developing opinions. Someone has to bin it, and everyone has agreed it should be someone.
The group project has five names on it and one person doing it. The other four are "really busy this week". The deadline is tomorrow, and suddenly everyone has a lot of ideas.
Why it caught on: the picture is a famous British First World War recruitment poster of a uniformed, moustached officer pointing straight at the viewer, first published in 1914. The image became one of the best known posters of the century, and people have been editing its wording ever since. It spread because the pointing finger suits any request, from the serious to the daft: put your own words on it and it is suddenly you who is being asked to do the washing up.
