Why it caught on: the picture shows an older woman in a peach lace dress and a pink feathered headpiece, staring ahead with deep disapproval. It was captured at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and spread online as the "Unimpressed Queen", a stern reaction shot for any show of enthusiasm. It lasted because a face of total, royal disapproval fits almost anything, from a fireworks display to an "ice-breaker", and the darker captions were the cheapest way to turn her stare into a punchline.
