The group chat goes quiet when someone asks who can help move a sofa on Saturday. Nobody types. Then your name appears, with a full stop after it, and you realise the silence was never going to protect you.

Your aunt spots you across the wedding reception and starts walking over, phone already in hand. She doesn't want to chat. She wants you to fix the wifi in a function room she doesn't live in.

The manager asks for a volunteer to take the minutes, and everyone looks at their notebook with sudden scholarly interest. You are the only one who looked up to check what was happening. That was the mistake.

The pub quiz team needs a person who knows about geography. Nobody does, but you once got Slovenia right, and now it's your specialist subject. Your teammates point at you the entire round.

Why it caught on: the picture is James Montgomery Flagg's "I Want YOU for U.S. Army" poster of 1917, in which Uncle Sam, the personification of the United States, points straight out of the frame at the viewer. Millions of copies were printed for recruitment, and its look drew on an earlier British recruiting poster of Lord Kitchener. It became a meme template because the pointing finger already did the work: it picks out whoever is reading, so any demand, request or absurd order could be added to the top and bottom lines.
