Your mate says "just a quick one" and you're still at the bar at 1am, tallying the rounds out loud. Seven pints, four packets of crisps, two kebabs. Nobody asked, but the numbers have to be said.

The self-checkout says "unexpected item in the bagging area" for the fifth time. You stand there counting the seconds until a member of staff arrives. Forty-one. Forty-two. Ah, ah, ah.

Someone in the group chat asks how many unread emails you have. You know it exactly: 14,382. You say it with pride. The number has been going up for years, and you have never once been tempted to deal with it.

Your flatmate asks how many times you've watched the same series. You say eleven, then count out each rewatch on your fingers, in order, with the seasons. It takes a while. The kettle goes cold.

Why it caught on: the picture shows the Count, the vampire puppet from Sesame Street, who has taught children to count since the show's early years, laughing and thunderclapping after every number. The meme took off on image macro sites as a joke about vampires and obsessive counting, with captions like "Dracula for president" and the "brought to you by the letters F and U" spin on the show's sponsor line. It spread because everyone has a habit they can't stop tallying, and because a cheerful cartoon vampire saying "ah, ah, ah" suits any list.
