Why it caught on: the picture is Jasper Beardly, the bearded old man from *The Simpsons*, holding a wooden paddle. It comes from a scene in which he lists offences in a flat voice and answers each with "That's a paddlin'". The picture was set in a black "Demotivational" poster frame, labelled "Motivation", and people then swapped in their own petty offences. It spread because the format is simple: name any minor crime, from a Justin Bieber fan to filming vertically, and the punishment is always the same.
