Why it caught on: the picture shows Emperor Palpatine, the hooded Sith Lord in the Star Wars films, played by Ian McDiarmid, in a still from the saga. His coaxing line to Luke Skywalker in *Return of the Jedi*, "Good, good, let the hate flow through you", turned into a template where he encourages whatever petty feeling the caption needs. It spread because the formula is easy to bend: swap "hate" for any bad habit, and the smug, patient face does the rest.
