Why it caught on: the picture shows Spock, the half-Vulcan science officer of the original *Star Trek* series, played by Leonard Nimoy, raising his hand in the Vulcan salute. It suited captions in two flavours: puns on "live long and prosper", and the character's cool, logical put-downs. After Nimoy's death in February 2015 it also became a way to say goodbye.
