A charity advert comes on between programmes, the kind with sad piano and a number on the screen. Someone in the room says "it's only the price of a coffee a day". You look at your coffee. You look at the screen. Nobody speaks.

A friend says the offer is "buy one, get one free", and you say "so you're telling me the second one is free?" There is a pause. Then the receipt arrives and you find out what "free" means.

Your housemate announces there are leftovers in the fridge. You ask the only question that matters: how many, and whose. The silence that follows is the real answer.

Someone at the table explains, very patiently, that the thing you have always done is actually wrong. Then they explain what it costs. You nod slowly, one eyebrow lower than the other, and wait for the catch.

Why it caught on: the photo shows a small boy in a striped shirt, looking sideways with a doubtful squint, while a woman beside him leans in to talk to him. It is usually known as "Third World Skeptical Kid", and people captioned it with "so you're telling me..." followed by something that sounds too good, or too silly, to be true. It spread because the look is the one everyone pulls when a claim doesn't add up, and the early captions often used it to question charity appeals and the odd ways rich countries talk about hunger.
