Why it caught on: the picture is an illustrated grey wolf in a tweed jacket and a monocle-style pair of round glasses, set against a Union Jack. Its captions have the wolf correcting everyone's vocabulary into stiff, over-polite Britishness, such as lorry for truck and full stop for period. It spread because the format is easy to write: a plain American word on the top line, a pompous correction underneath, and the joke works whether you are the one correcting or the one being corrected.
