Why it caught on: the picture is a still of Morpheus, the character played by Laurence Fishburne in *The Matrix* (1999), in the scene where he offers Neo a choice. The "What if I told you" captions took off around 2012, turning his calm, knowing stare into a way of delivering a mildly revolutionary fact. "Scumbag" is a nod to the Scumbag Steve format, and it spread because the template is easy to fill: any ordinary observation sounds profound when someone with those sunglasses says it.
