Why it caught on: the picture shows Ron Burgundy, the vain, overconfident San Diego news anchor of the 1970s from the comedy *Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy* (2004), in his moustache and burgundy suit. The character is a pompous, clueless man whose sexist "facts" are the joke, and the template took off because it suits any line delivered with total, unearned confidence, from birthday wishes to made-up statistics.
