The group chat has a friend who sends "can't make it, sorry" half an hour after everyone has sat down. The rest of the evening is spent being very polite about it.

Why it caught on: the picture is a still from *Pulp Fiction* (1994), written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, from the scene where the hitman Jules Winnfield points a pistol at a frightened man and demands he never repeat one particular word. People took the threat and left the blank open: fill in whatever word, phrase or habit has worn out its welcome, and the picture does the rest. It spread because everyone has a word they could happily never hear again.
