Your phone is on 2% and the only charger in the office belongs to someone who is in a meeting. You hover near their desk. You don't say anything yet, but the face says it for you.

It's 4:50 on a Friday and you ask the shop to check the stockroom once more for your size. The assistant says it's definitely not there. You say "but could you just look". They look. It isn't there.

The printer jams ten minutes before the presentation. You stand over it and whisper that you've always been good to it, that you recycled its paper, that you'll never ask for colour again.

Your flatmate is halfway through the last biscuit. You don't ask for half. You just stand there, quietly, until the offer comes.

Why it caught on: the picture is a hand-drawn rage comic face: a round head, huge glossy eyes with blue tears welling in them, and small clasped hands held under the chin. It was captioned for begging and puppy-eyed requests, usually with a plea in the top line and a pitiful twist underneath. It spread because the drawing is simple, readable at thumbnail size, and everyone has asked for something while knowing they had no leverage at all.
