Why it caught on: the picture is Old Man Pepperidge Farm, a character from the animated series Family Guy, shown on a cart holding a carton of the brand's bread. It comes from the real Pepperidge Farm baking brand's old television advertising, whose slogan "Pepperidge Farm remembers" the show borrowed for a nostalgic old man. People kept the slogan and swapped in their own fond memories, mostly of how things were better before, and the format has been easy to reuse ever since.
