Your streaming service has a new "exclusive" series. Ten minutes in, the hero holds up a can of fizzy drink, label to camera, and says nothing about it. The plot resumes. The can stays in shot.

Someone mentions a film they loved as a child, and the sequel has since turned it into something with a budget, a cinematic universe and a sponsored trainer. You nod along. You are mourning.

A forum you used to like has a front page of reposts, bot accounts and links to things you can buy. You scroll for a full minute looking for a person. There isn't one.

Someone says "you're taking this too seriously" about a pub argument over a biscuit. You pause, then you remember when nobody would have said that, because nobody would have been recording it.

Why it caught on: the picture is the old man on the cart from *Family Guy*, a cartoon character who introduces "Pepperidge Farm remembers", a line borrowed from the biscuit company's old adverts. Online, it became the format for fond complaints about how things used to be, from films and games to websites. It spread because everybody has a golden age, and almost everybody is a little too happy to say so.
