Why it caught on: the picture is Patrick Star from *SpongeBob SquarePants*, pointing and gesturing wildly at a crowd of startled fish. In the episode he is rallying them behind a plan of his own. Online it became a template for a grand, badly thought-out proposal, usually opening with "Let's take all the..." and ending with a neat swap of one thing for another. It spread because the format is easy to fill in: anyone can propose a sweeping fix to a problem, from DLC to bread crusts, in two lines.
