The season finale drops and the whole internet watches it in the same weekend. You avoid every app for 48 hours, only to find that a colleague has spoiled it with a single, cheerful "wow, that ending".

You ask how many unread emails are in your inbox, expecting a respectable number. The little red badge has stopped counting and just says "99+". It has been saying that since March.

Why it caught on: the picture shows Vegeta, the Saiyan prince from Dragon Ball Z, crushing a scouter, the device used to measure power levels, in his fist after it reads his rival's power as over 9000. In the 1990s English dub, the line "It's over 9000!" was a famously over-the-top delivery. It spread across forums in the mid-2000s as shorthand for any number that is absurdly large, and it fits every count, queue and statistic that gets out of hand.
