Someone posts a comment far too spicy for a Tuesday, gets a hundred furious replies, and responds with "that wasn't me, someone's using my account". The comment history disagrees. So does the screenshot your cousin took.

At dinner a mate tells a joke that goes one line too far. Forks stop. He looks round for backup, finds none, and says "tough crowd" to a room that has become furniture.

Why it caught on: the picture is a bearded man in a white turban over a yellow and brown sunburst, the colour-burst look of the early advice-animal templates, and meme generator sites filled up with captions on it. Most leaned on the lazy stereotype of the Muslim man as a terrorist, with crude jokes about bombs, pork and virgins, and later ones swapped in the Turkish president's name as the punchline. It spread because the format made a deliberately provocative one-liner effortless, and shock was the whole appeal.
