Someone says the obvious thing very slowly, as if they've just discovered fire. The meeting has been about the printer for forty minutes. You lean back, widen your eyes and say it with your whole face.

A colleague announces that the Wi-Fi is down while holding a phone that is clearly connected to it. Or your flatmate says "I think the bins are full" while standing next to the overflowing bin, pointing at it. Nobody has ever been so grateful for a reaction image.

The pop-up says an update is available. It has said so every morning since March. You click "remind me tomorrow" with the calm of someone who knows exactly how this ends.

Your friend tells you, as breaking news, that the film you both saw last night had a twist. Or that Monday is, in fact, the start of the week. You nod. You say nothing. Your eyebrows say it all.

Why it caught on: the picture is a still of Nicolas Cage, taken from the 1980s film *Vampire's Kiss*, in which he plays a literary agent who becomes convinced he is turning into a vampire. The wide-eyed, delighted stare was paired with "you don't say?" around 2010, and the mock-surprise worked on any statement of the blindingly obvious. It spread because that face fits every sentence, and because the cruellest reply to a pointless remark is to look thrilled by it.
