Two minutes before kick-off, the group chat argues about whether the office dress code means smart or smart-casual. Four grown adults, one shared document, and nobody willing to say what a collar is for.

Your team of five has a decision to make about the pub quiz answer. Nobody knows it. Somebody's cousin "reckons it's Portugal". You go with Portugal, because the alternative is another round of discussion.

The landlord's meeting about the car park ends with a ruling nobody can explain. Someone mentions "after further review", someone else nods, and the notice goes up on the door the next morning, handwritten and slightly crooked.

Why it caught on: the picture shows four American football officials in black and white striped shirts huddled together mid-game, one with the number 108 on his back, apparently deep in discussion. People captioned it as the moment the referees decide something absurd: a dodgy call, a baseball ruling in a football game, or a verdict reached on the word of a spectator. It spread because everyone has watched a decision being made by a huddle and suspected the reasoning was no better than theirs.
