You sit down at nine to fix one small thing on the computer. You look up and it is half past three, the birds have started, and the small thing has become a different, bigger thing. You are, inexplicably, reading about printer drivers.

Someone at the party asks what you've been up to. You say "not much", then spend eleven minutes on a home server. They nod like a hostage. You can see it, and you carry on anyway.

A relative announces at Christmas that the wifi is "broken", and every head turns to you. It is not broken. The router has been moved behind the telly. You are given a mince pie and a look of deep reverence.

The group chat asks "who's in for Saturday?" You write a long, careful reply covering availability, travel and contingencies. Everyone else sent a thumbs up four hours ago.

Why it caught on: the picture shows a man in thick glasses and a short-sleeved checked shirt in a wood-panelled room, sitting beside an old computer and a dot matrix printer with a cigarette in his hand. It looks like an 1980s snapshot, and people captioned it as the stereotypical computer nerd: pale, indoors, on IRC all night, living on hot pockets, with no luck with girls. It spread because the joke was easy to finish in two lines, either as the stereotype or as the nerd's comeback.
