You hear the words "all-staff meeting, calendar invite to follow" at 4:55 on a Thursday. Nobody reacts. Everyone knows what the next hour of Friday looks like.

Why it caught on: the picture shows Sean Bean as Eddard "Ned" Stark in *Game of Thrones*, the HBO series that began in 2011. The Stark family's motto, "Winter is coming", became a warning for any approaching dread, and "Brace yourselves, X is coming" spread as an image macro that same year. It worked because everyone knows what it feels like to see trouble coming and still have to stand there.
