Your weekly shop is going fine until you open the news app in the queue. Three headlines in, you are holding a bag of rice and a bottle of gin, and the gin is no longer for a recipe.

The group chat sends you a forecast, an election result and a housing price in the same hour. You reply with a thumbs up, because it is the only reaction that doesn't need a plan.

Someone at work says "exciting times" about a restructure. You nod. You update your CV on your phone in the toilets. It is the first productive thing you've done all week.

Every so often it all gets too much, so you close the tabs, mute the thread and open a page of memes. Nothing is fixed, but at least the doom now comes with captions.

Why it caught on: the picture is a still from *The Sound of Music* (1965), showing Julie Andrews as Maria spinning with her arms out in an alpine meadow, in the film's opening scene. People pasted gloomy captions over the joyful scene, with the hills now "alive" with apocalypse, and the contrast worked for any bad news at all. It spread because the picture is already so cheerful that any disaster written on it sounds funnier.
