Why it caught on: the picture is a crude, hand-drawn rage-comic-style figure with a smug, half-lidded look, and it was added to captions where someone does something with unreasonable ease or confidence. The simple "like a boss" tag was applied to everything from sensible achievements to deliberately mundane or silly ones, such as googling Google or ignoring Valentine's Day. That made it easy to reuse, and its format of a deed on the first line and "like a boss" on the second kept it going.
