Your friend begins a story with "so then I said", and you are already gone. You haven't heard the ending. You have heard the tone of voice she does for the ending, which is plenty.

Someone in the office tells the one about the printer, the customer and the reply-all. Everyone laughs for far longer than the story deserves. By the end it's mostly relief that it wasn't them.

You tell the small lie, the one with a straight face and a plausible detail. It works. Now you have to leave the room before your face gives you away, and your friend is texting you "did he really?" from the next table.

Two people who have known each other since school share one look across a pub. Nobody else at the table knows what it means, and nobody will be told.

Why it caught on: the picture shows two blonde women laughing together, one with her face buried in her hands and the other grinning with sunglasses pushed up on her head. People captioned it as the friend-to-friend story, usually opening with "and then I said" and ending in a smug punchline, a petty victory or a harmless lie that somehow worked. It spread because everyone recognises the kind of laughing where the story is only half the fun.
