Your boss asks you to "stay calm" about the deadline that moved up by a week. You nod, open the spreadsheet, and close it again. Calm is a thing you will be doing later, in private, in the car.

The group chat has been arguing about where to eat since half past six. It is now nine. Someone says "I'm easy, honestly". Nobody is easy. Everybody keep calm and nobody say Nando's.

You are told the test results will arrive "within five to seven working days". It is day two. You have refreshed the page forty times, and the page has not changed its mind.

Your flight is delayed, then delayed again, then the gate changes to the one furthest from the pub. You sit down with a lukewarm sandwich and a face like a hostage negotiator.

Why it caught on: the picture is a British government poster from 1939, produced at the start of the Second World War to lift morale if the country were bombed. It was barely used, and a copy turned up in a bookshop in Alnwick in 2000, after which it became a best-selling print and then a template. The slogan was easy to bend into any command, and the crown and plain white lettering made every new version look official, which is why it was imitated until it was thoroughly worn out.
