Why it caught on: in "Big Pink Loser" (season 2, 2001) Patrick lands a turn at the Krusty Krab and answers the phone. The caller asks "Is this the Krusty Krab?" and Patrick, proudly, says "No, this is Patrick!" - again, and again. It became the internet's shorthand for answering exactly what was asked and nothing that was meant.
