Why it caught on: the picture is a still from the animated series The Fairly OddParents, showing Mr. Crocker, the obsessive teacher, with his hands out in front of a velvet-roped display. People captioned it with a line about proudly showing off the place where something would go "if I had one", and it spread because everybody owns a very well-presented gap.
