The group chat is arguing about whether the new phone is worth the money, and someone has already typed "it's basically the same as last year's" with total confidence. You know the answer. You also know it is one more explanation of why the charger is different.
Four of you are trying to work out where a noise in the flat is coming from. Somebody says the word "aliens", entirely as a joke. Ten minutes later it is still the leading theory and nobody has checked the boiler.
It is 2 a.m. and you are three videos deep into how a pyramid was built. The official answer is plain and sensible. You skip it and go straight for the one with the dramatic music and a man gesturing at a map.
Someone at the pub says "right, but think about it" and then a long, unbroken pause while you and the table wait. A theory is on its way. It will be about pigeons, or the moon, or both.
Why it caught on: the picture is a still of a man with wild hair and wide, animated hands, taken from a History Channel programme, with the channel's logo in the corner. People captioned it with "Aliens" and with a name for whoever they wanted to accuse of a wild theory, from fans of a phone brand to fans of a TV show. It spread because the face fits every confident explanation that comes out of nowhere, and it is still used for the same thing.
