Why it caught on: the picture is a bearded young man in glasses and a dark scarf, with a tattoo of a feather peeking out of his V-neck, looking past the camera with a flat stare. People captioned it with the hipster stereotype of the early 2010s: someone who rejects anything popular, claims to hate consumerism, and is as contradictory as anyone else. It spread because the contradictions were easy to spot and easy to write, and the joke is at the expense of the pose rather than any person who wears a scarf.
