The group chat goes quiet after someone asks who finished the milk and put the empty carton back in the fridge. Everyone is typing. Nobody sends anything. You open the fridge, look at the carton, and know exactly who it was.

The email says "per my last message", and you did not read the last message. You now have ninety seconds to appear to have read it before the call starts, and one of them is already gone.

At the family gathering, an uncle asks who still hasn't sent the photos from the wedding. Forty faces turn to look at nobody in particular. It's you, and you know it, and he knows you know.

Somebody in the office says "whoever keeps microwaving fish" at the kitchen door, loudly, to the whole floor. You stand there holding a Tupperware lid and a very bad decision.

Why it caught on: the picture is a plain black-and-white drawing of a bald, smiling figure pointing straight out of the frame at the viewer. People captioned it with a setup line on top and a punchline that lands on "you", usually crude, absurd or both. It spread because the finger does the work: any sentence put beside it becomes aimed at whoever is reading, so the template needs no explaining.
