Your aunt asks, for the fourth year running, whether you've "got anyone special yet". She asks it over a paper hat and a lukewarm sprout. You say you're very happy as you are. Nobody believes you, least of all the gravy.

Christmas Eve, 11pm, and the shop is down to its last three items: a single pine-scented candle, a novelty mug and a calendar from 2019. You buy all three. Somebody is getting a very personal gift.

The relatives arrive at ten, stay until midnight, and leave a trail of foil, crumbs and unsolicited opinions on your life choices. You wave from the doorway, smiling, already counting the days until January.

Why it caught on: the picture shows Tardar Sauce, the cat known as Grumpy Cat, whose permanently sour face came from feline dwarfism and an underbite. Her owner's brother posted photos of her on Reddit in September 2012, and the scowl went round the world within days. Christmas was the obvious season for it, since a cat that looks unimpressed by everything is the perfect messenger for the forced cheer of the holidays, and people captioned her in front of wreaths and poinsettias with their own seasonal grievances.
