You've watched someone type "your welcome" in a group chat and felt something die quietly inside you. You didn't reply. You screenshotted it and sent it to one friend, who understood completely.

The email says "Please find attached the document's you requested." You read it twice, forward it to nobody, and open the attachment anyway, with the faint air of a man making a sacrifice.

Your mate's dating profile says he's "looking for someone who's loyal, and likes to travel, and has there own place." You wanted him to do well. You still do. It's just that the odds have changed.

A shop sign promises "Fresh Egg's, Free Range". Somewhere a greengrocer is very proud of it, and you walk past, a small act of mercy that costs you something.

Why it caught on: the picture is a mid-century style black-and-white illustration of a smartly dressed man in a suit and tie, smiling with one hand raised in a "stop" gesture. Who drew it and where it first appeared is unknown, but it was captioned as "Grammar Guy" and used to stop someone mid-sentence over a spelling or punctuation slip, usually "your/you're" and "lose/loose". It spread because the correction was so easy to make and so annoying to receive, and the best posts often made a mistake of their own.
