Your landlord emails: "Great news, we're making improvements to the building." The improvements are scaffolding across your window, a drill at 7 a.m. and a rent review attached as a PDF.

You've been cooking for an hour and the smoke alarm is going. A voice from the sofa says the takeaway has just arrived, and you stare at the pan, which looks a lot worse now.

Why it caught on: the picture is Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth, the elderly, bald, bespectacled inventor from the animated series *Futurama*, who opens each mission with the line "Good news, everyone!". The catch is that the news is nearly always awful, so people borrowed the opening line and put the reveal underneath, whether it was a sacking, a loveseat or a forgotten train of thought.
