A man at the pub swears his home town has the best chips in the country. He left it fifteen years ago and now lives two hundred miles away. He defends the chip shop's honour with total conviction, and he hasn't been back since.

Every wedding, a great-aunt grips your arm and says "you're next". You smile, nod and eat a samosa. You have been single for six years, and she has said it at four weddings and one christening.

You hear someone say "I would never live anywhere else" from a flat in a city they moved to for the salary. You nod, because the point is obviously made, and a better thing to say would only hurt more.

Why it caught on: the picture is a cropped face of a bearded young man with wide eyes and a lopsided smirk, set on a red-orange gradient, which suited the advice-animal format of a top line and a punchline. It spread because the format rewarded confident nonsense and the picture looked ready to deliver it.
