The Facebook notification arrives at 7:02 on a Tuesday. Someone you last spoke to in 2014 is having a birthday, and by lunchtime forty people you've never met will have written "HBD!!" on their wall. You will add to the pile, because that is the rule.

It is Sunday afternoon, the sun is out, and you feel fine. Then you remember that tomorrow has a time on it. The whole house goes quiet and the evening starts to shrink.

The first week of December, and the group chat has begun to plan. Someone says "just a small one this year", which means forty people and a spreadsheet. Everyone has been warned and no one is ready.

The final episode is a day away, and you have avoided the internet like a man dodging a debt. You will hear what happens to everyone you love, probably from a stranger in a lift, in one sentence.

Why it caught on: the picture is Sean Bean as Ned Stark in the 2011 HBO series *Game of Thrones*, standing in a fur-collared cloak with a sword. The line "brace yourselves" comes from the House Stark motto, "Winter is coming", and the meme took that warning and attached it to anything on its way, from birthdays to Mondays. It spread because the pose is so grave that any ordinary approaching event, however small, looks like a coming catastrophe.
