Why it caught on: it's a rage comic face, usually called the Yao Ming face or "Bitch Please", said to be traced from a photo of the basketball player Yao Ming laughing. It spread through rage comics and image boards around 2010 as the all-purpose smug, dismissive laugh, and it suited any caption that needed a shrug. Some captions, though, leaned on a lazy broken-English stereotype of Chinese people, which was the cheap joke, not the funny one.
